Camp Trailer Towing Checklist
Before leaving to go on a camping trip, or when you are getting ready to leave to head home from a camping trip, here are the important things that should not be overlooked. This RV pre-departure checklist does not necessarily have to be completed in the exact order as things are listed. Depending on your individual trailer or RV setup there may be other items that need attention.
RV Pre-Departure Checklist
Check propane tank levels - fill if needed
Check all fluid levels in vehicle - oil, brake, power steering, gas, wiper fluid, coolant
Check for any check engine lights
Check tires and tire pressure on camp trailer/RV as well as tow vehicle
Ensure lug nuts and bolts are tightened on trailer/RV and tow vehicle
Make sure the trailer is all the way on the hitch and locked in place
Make sure safety chains are hooked up in cross (x) pattern
Make sure electrical cable is connected and all lights on trailer work
Make sure your sway bars are connected properly
Make sure trailer brake is connected and working
Put your tow vehicle in tow/haul mode
Make sure all stabilizer jacks and stabilizers are up
Remove all wheel chocks
Make sure all exterior storage and entry doors are closed and locked
Make sure water pump is off
Drain your black, gray, and freshwater tank
Turn off propane valves
Ensure any cargo is tied down and secured
Close any ceiling vents
Lower roof antenna
Turn water heater off
Drain water from all lines - faucets and toilet(s)
Make sure trailer AC unit is turned off
make sure refrigerator and freezer doors are completely latched shut
Check all cabinet doors and drawers to make sure they are closed completely
Make sure trailer awning is completely rolled up
Make sure bathroom door is tightly closed
Make sure there are no loose items left out on counter - place in sinks and/or microwave for drive
Make sure glass stove top cover is down
Make sure any trailer slide-out is slid back in for towing
Disconnect any power cables, exterior water hoses, sewage hose, or coax cable before towing your trailer
Make sure all lights are turned off in your trailer - they can drain your battery if left on
Secure anything on the floor that may slide around while towing your trailer
Slide in your RV steps and close door handle latch
